High School Performing Arts NYC?

Iris Shawcroft: I am a NYC public school teacher and my daughter is applying to high school this year. She is interested in arts high schools, so I happen to know a lot about Laguardia right now. (Her audition for that school is next week, BTW.)The truth is, I would have told you exactly what that email told you. You cannot enter Laguardia in 11th grade. They only audition 8th graders for seats in the 9th grade class, or 9th graders for seats in the 10th grade class. All the specialized schools in NYC are like that. In fact, it is unlikely that you could enter any of the better performing arts schools in NYC in 11th grade. As for auditioning for an earlier grade, Laguardia DOES allow people who are moving to NYC to audition in August for either the 9th or 10th grade class. However you MUST be able to prove residency at that time. If you were going to move here a year earlier you might be able to do that. Hope this helps.EDIT: Oh and I just re-read your question and saw wh! at you wrote about Julliard having only a 7 percent acceptance rate. Well, Laguardia's acceptance rate is only between 7 and 10 percent as well (depending on which studio you are auditioning for - acting, vocal, instrumental, fine art, dance, stage design, etc.)EDIT: I re-read your question again and I realize that you are asking for any schools other than Laguardia as well. The other really good performing arts school in NYC (in Queens) is the Frank Sinatra High School of the Arts. I don't know if they take anyone in 11th grade. I doubt it truthfully, but you could write to them. Also, in Manhattan, for the performing arts only, is Talent Unlimited, a public school on the Upper East Side. There are other performing arts schools, but these are the only good ones that are easily accessible from Manhattan. In Brooklyn (but for Brooklyn residents only) is Murrow High School - a really large school with a great arts program. But you have live in Brooklyn to attend and it's also! very hard to get into....Show more

Dedra Furguson: wow I am on the same page :) sorry if my answer isn't going to help at all but just think; I can do this, be full of confidence don't think the worst think the best. Like what if I mess up something don't think that, rather think I won't mess up something because I know what I'm doing and I'm just going to do this for my self. You could always audition at many schools and see what school wants to take you in and accept the best opportunity. Just don't give up on your self and do your best. Catheryn Barringer: Btw, i emailed my issue (in a much more proffesional way lol) to LaGuardia arts and i got a very straighforward no nonsense type of a reply:Students must be! residents of NYC at the time of the audition. We only audition students who are currently in the 8th or 9th grade. We do not schedule auditions for 10th, 11th, and 12th graders. -------------------------so really,the email didnt help me much at all..so i rlllyyy hope u guys can help me!...Show more
